Choosing Wedding Pearls: It’s Easier Than You Think

Over hundreds of years, pearls have become a timeless wedding accessory. It’s no wonder really. They’re so flexible and truly complement a modern, glam or even vintage-inspired wedding theme. The various hues of Tahitian pearls add a particularly chic touch to almost any bridal wardrobe. After all, they are both flexible and classic enough to fit into the entire "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” tradition.

It's All About You

Regardless of your own personal bridal style, from classic to Boho or vintage to country, pearls can be displayed in a variety of accessories, decorations and designs. These pretty, tasteful embellishments are usually best matched once you’ve settled on your wedding dress:

  • A pure-white gown is usually best complemented by silver-toned pearls. These are also known to truly light up brides who have medium, tan and dark complexions.
  • An off-white dress is best showcased with cream-toned pearls. These also tend to look really beautiful on almost any complexion.
  • A cream or even ivory gown is truly flattered by pink-toned pearls. These also usually look particularly stunning with brides who have fair hair and skin.
  • A darker color wedding dress can truly deliver on the drama with all “black”, or a mix of light and dark, toned pearls. These can be both absolutely stunning and a little unexpected.

We recently discussed the differences between saltwater and freshwater pearls. However, the world of ocean “periculture” is simply fascinating. There are three major types of saltwater cultured pearls, Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea. These share many of the same characteristics but, as is the case with natural pearls, each can look vastly different. This is especially true because each is sourced from a different species of oceanic oyster that can only grow one pearl at a time. Without further ado, here’s what you need to know about the different types of saltwater pearls.

While pearls are certainly revered all around the world, it’s also one of the gemstones that people try to fake the most.
